Weston-super-Mare Rocks

Rock Salt at South Sands Hotel

Not much beats getting together with old friends! I wouldn't like to tell you how many years I've been knocking around with this pair but it's a friendship which dates back to happy years at Worle school.

Last night we enjoyed a rare #mumsnightout so thought we would check out the new Rock Salt restaurant at South Sands Hotel in Sand Bay.

South Sands Hotel is the old Commodore Hotel, it's still under refurbishment at the moment but it will be a great addition to Sand Bay for people coming into Weston.

The Restaurant

Booking was really easy - my friend Vicky did it! Vicky tells me that she was able to book online and it was a really easy, slick process.

When we arrived at the restaurant there was plenty of parking, I imagine the car park may become a little more challenging when the hotel is open and at full capacity but there are plenty of other parking in options in Sand Bay.

The interior is fresh and new and with the nautical theme you would expect from a sea front restaurant, the furniture and decor are the perfect fit for the intended (according to the website) laid back dining experience.

We were walked through a busy restaurant to our table, there was a lovely atmosphere with tables full of families and friends enjoying themselves.

The waiting staff were all really polite and swift in their service, our drinks order was taken and they arrived at the table quickly. We were given time to chose from the menu - it did not take me long to decide as the menu is available online and I do confess I had been checking it out earlier in the day. I was therefore disappointed when I was told there were no muscles available!

We all opted for scallops to start and I chose the salmon as a main course.

The Food

The scallops arrived promptly and were delicious!

The main course arrived shortly after and again we were not disappointed, we each had large pieces of fish that were tasty and cooked perfectly.

By the time we had finished eating the sun was coming down and unfortunately there were no blinds and the sun was shining through the window in my eyes - I know I shouldn't complain, it was a lovely evening but as it was no longer comfortable to sit at the table we went to sit on the terrace to have another drink. The terrace is lovely and I should imagine it will be a fabulous spot to sit and dine in the coming summer months.

Would I return?

I will definitely return and recommend!

Although I felt the service could have been slowed down to enable us to enjoy our night out and company more, plus I was disappointed by the lack of muscles, I had a very nice experience.

There was plenty to chose from on the menu - check it out HERE.

UPDATE: Since published this review South Sands Hotel contacted me to let me know they had been waiting on custom made blinds to be installed but sadly there were shipment issues. As a temporary solution they installed a voile to resolve the issue of the sun blazing through the window. Nice work team at South Sands Hotel!
